Azie Taylor Morton (b.1936 d.2003) remains the only black woman to serve as Treasurer of the United States.
Appointed by President Carter, she served from 1977-1981. U.S. currency printed during her tenure bears her signature.
She served on President Kennedy's Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity; was an American delegate to the Enthronement of Pope John Paul II; and chaired the People to People Mission to the Soviet Union and China.
Her life-long commitment to public service included acting as an election observer in Haiti, Senegal and the Dominican Republic and serving as a U.S. representative to the first African/African-American Conference held in Africa.
